Happy Thanksgiving!

On October 3, 1789, during his first year as President, George Washington issued a proclamation that set aside Thursday, November 26 (1789) as "A Day of Public Thanksgiving and Prayer." Entitled "General Thanksgiving," the decree appointed the day "to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and single favors of Almighty God."
|
By the PRESIDENT of the United States Of America, |
WHEREAS it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favor; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me "to recommend to the people of the United States a DAY OF PUBLIC THANKSGIVING and PRAYER, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:"
NOW THEREFORE, I do recommend and assign THURSDAY, the TWENTY-SIXTH DAY of NOVEMBER next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the Service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the single and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish Constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted;-- for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge;-- and, in general, for all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to confer upon us.
And also, that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions;-- to enable us all, whether in public or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all Sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shown kindness unto us); and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.
GIVEN under my hand, at the city of New-York, the third day of October, in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and eighty-nine.

Christmas concerts
This is from December 8th, when Kira's school choir and choirs from another elementary school, the nearby middle school, and the high school gave performances. At the end of the show all the choirs were onstage singing the last song together. It was wonderful.
Kira's school choir performed six different times between November 21st and December 10th. This is from the last performance, which included a play as well as the singing.
Parker's school band put on their concert on December 9th, but I didn't make it there, sad to say. My Achilles tendinitis was really acting up. =( I'll bet they did wonderfully well, though. The music teachers at the intermediate school are very talented at getting the best performances out of their students.
Austen's school bands performed last night, December 14th. The first video is of the Jazz Band; the second and third videos are of the Wind Ensemble, in which Austen plays clarinet.
(Cut short about 30 seconds when my camera ran out of space for videos!)
Merry Christmas to everyone!

Christmas 2008
In this first photo, you can see Austen's feet In back and to the left of the tree! He was still fiddling with the presents and trying to lure Cabbie into the vacant spot made for him!
Now Cabbie gets the message ... er ... the snack to lure him to that particular spot under the tree.
He's getting there!
What a pretty tree, with a pretty kitty posing amid all the presents! (And you can see Austen's arms back under the tree, too, it you look!)
Kira and Parker are keeping Cabbie company!
On Christmas morning, after ripping through most of their presents, the three kids come together to open their "group" gifts -- and guess what???
It's a Wii and all kinds of accessories, including some light sabers!!
Everyone's involved in setting it up and learning how to use it.

Thanksgiving holidays
They loved climbing all over the cat climbing toy!
On Friday, we drove over to the San Jacinto Memorial and Museum. Here are the girls standing on the big platform that surrounds the tall memorial building. Here is where Sam Houston and his army defeated Santa Anna and his troops -- and secured Texas's independence from Mexico in 1836.
After taking the elevator to the top of the memorial tower, we drove "across the road" and toured the Battleship Texas. The girls had a great time learning how those mid-size guns used to be manipulated!
On Saturday, we took Kira and Parker with us and went to the Johnson Space Center (NASA) south of Houston. Here are Parker and the girls, just before we went on the tram tour of the NASA buildings and saw the training areas for the international space station, the new lunar rover, and one of the huge Saturn rockets.
A practice-version of the lunar land rover used by Apollo crews on the moon.
Here's a mock-up of the international space station -- notice all the blue and other tarps, which were put on the sections to protect them from the furies and rain of Hurricane Ike a couple of months ago!
Here's a look at the new lunar rover -- the one they plan to use on the NEXT trip to the moon!
And here's my attempt to get that Saturn rocket in one picture -- it's way too big to do that, though!
Both girls fell asleep in the back of the minivan on the way home from the Space Center!

Linehan Christmas!
(Remember you can click on each photo to 'biggify' and see it in more detail.)
Here they are by the tree and all the presents before diving in and unwrapping everything!
Austen got "Driver Education in a Box" so he can start studying and qualify for his learner's permit pretty soon.
Parker got Guitar Hero III (Xbox game), so now he and Austen can have contests!
Kira got some rollerblades and all the protection gear for knees, elbows, and hands. She also got a new bike.
And all the kids got this new TV. They are a happy lot, indeed!

Day after Thanksgiving
Austen and the KO band and football team are off to Huntsville for the second round of high school football playoffs. It's cold out and Anne tells me that Austen is sick again. How miserable for him.
