First playoff game today

Here are some photos from today's first playoff game - Klein Oak HS vs College Park HS (from The Woodlands):

The drumline is below. The clarinets and flutes were sitting in front of the drums and weren't visible from where we sat.

They're playing "Low Rider" in the half-time show, but since they're facing the home team's bleachers, not us, the sound is muffled.

Turkey Trot (school fundraiser)

Here are several pictures of Kira and other second graders before, during, and after their Turkey Trot last Friday. (Click any photo to "biggify.")

Ready, set, go!

Here's Kira's class poster -- see her name toward the right?

Kira made it four times around the course, and when she finished she was really red-faced and hot ... but still smiling!

How the Linehan kids prepare for Halloween

Our delicate ballerina -- playing the video game guitar...
Parker's dressed in his Red Sox uniform, but Austen hasn't made a move to get his costume together yet! They're busy!!

And finally, two photos of Austen in his (you supply the name) get-up. We still haven't the foggiest what character he was dressed as ... or thought he was!

Last marching band contest this year

Today, KOHS band and many others competed in the marching band festival at Sam Houston State University up in Huntsville. The video I took of their performance is too large to be uploaded to YouTube, but here are some photos of the band and the stadium, too. It was a beautiful day -- perfect for this type of activity.

KOHS Band at today's football game

Here are some views from the game (KOHS vs Tomball HS). Click on each photo to "biggify" and see more detail. First up is Austen's friend Jeremy and his mom, Amy -- Jeremy plays trumpet.

Next up is Kira (lower left) trying to get Austen's attention; Austen has the Coke can in front of his face!!

Here are some photos of the band preparing for their half-time performance.

And finally, here are some links to a couple of videos of the drumline who performed not only in the stands during the game, but also on the field at the end of half-time. They're terrific!

Lone Star Preview - marching band contest

This morning, Anne and I drove north to Conroe where we watched the Klein Oak HS Marching Band participate in the Lone Star Preview marching contest. Here are some photos of the band coming onto the field and then during their performance.

After their performance, they and all their instruments and other paraphernalia had to reboard the buses and trek to the school's football game against Tomball HS, which started about 2 pm today.

More improvements at the Linehans'

Anne and Ken had some major work done on their front yard this past weekend. The gardeners removed nearly all the old, ugly plants that the builder had put in across the front, and put in new ones -- of Anne's choice! (The old ones were replanted in a remote part of the back yard; they may make it ... or not.) These two planting areas really look great now, and the Linehans are a happy bunch.

Here's a link to a photo of their front yard in March 2006. Notice the non-descript plants under the windows of the house on either side of the front door.

KO vs Spring

Last Friday night, Klein Oak played Spring HS in football -- quite a rivalry, I guess. KO beat Spring handily, and now KO is 5-0 and ranked 4th in their class (5A).

Austen took this photo of himself and his friend Lauren with his camera-phone. It's really a good one, of both of them!

What is this?

I took some chai tea and my book out onto my patio this morning -- what a gorgeous morning it is, too! -- and while I was looking around at all the things that need cleaning up after this very wet summer, I saw this. I believe it's a moth, but I certainly don't know the exact name. It's really beautiful, and I've never thought moths are beautiful!

Let me know if you know its name or how to find out, please.

UPDATE: Ahhhhh! It's known as a Luna Moth, relative of the silkworm moth:

The KO Band from the home side!

Tonight, KOHS played their weekly football game - and I'm pretty sure they won. We didn't stay through the game since Kira and Parker needed to get some sleep and be ready for school tomorrow. I did get some pretty good pix and videos, though.

The visiting team's drill team.

KOHS's drill team, known as the Strutters. Notice the KOHS marching band all lined up across the field, ready to put on their half-time show.

Here's a video of the band playing "rev 'em up" music in the stands during the first half.

Good ol' Blogger won't let me upload the other two, so here are some links to them in YouTube:

Mixed evening

Tonight, Austen was getting ready to go to his first Homecoming Dance, and Parker was playing an Xbox game (on the old Xbox since they've already burned up the new Xbox!!). The photos and movies are fun to see!

Parker's 12!

Parker turned 12 on September 1, and Ken and Anne took their three plus Abbi and Austin to Main Event - a place for laser tag, bowling, billiards, and other fun stuff for kids! The dinner and ice-cream-cake in the evening were fun, too, as you can tell from these photos!!

First football game '07

On Friday, August 31, Austen's school went to The Berry Center in Cypress, TX, for their first football game: football players, cheerleaders, drill team, and - best of all! - the marching band!

The Berry Center is quite impressive. We were really surprised, though, at how sparse the fans on the "home team" side were. We, the visiting team, had far more fans, not to mention that we had our band; their band left before the game (delayed by threatening lightning storm) even began.

Here's the band in the stands before half-time. Austen is in the very center of the photo.

And here he is, also in the center of the photo, putting on his jacket and headgear in preparation for their half-time performance.

I took some videos of their performances, too: playing the school's fight song during the game and part of their half-time performance. Too bad they were facing the wrong audience!!

It was very late when we all got home. We all had a good time, even though the game was delayed by the storm that never came!

Bus stop

Yesterday was Kira's first day of second grade, and today was her first day to ride a school bus to school. You can't imagine how much excitement that generated! Here she is with her friend Abbi, Abbi's brother Austin, and other neighborhood children.

She got on that bus so fast, I was lucky to get a shot of the back of her pink backpack as she climbed aboard!

Band practice

I took these from the car this afternoon. Hot, hot, hot out there! It'll be interesting to see their performances from football stands in another ten days or so.

My resident critter

If you look carefully (or click on the picture to "biggify" and see better), you can see the toad that has taken residence inside that drainpipe. He is just sitting on top of the black drain, just at the left of the downspout.

He loves it there, I guess. Whenever it has rained a lot - and we've had PLENTY of rain this summer and are due for some more - he sits in that drainpipe and croaks and croaks!

He's very noisy, especially at night or just after a downpour!

Kira - so much fun!

On a day when going to get big brother Austen a haircut was NOT high on Kira's list of fun things to do, she made some fun for herself anyway. She built the tallest Lego tower she had ever done -- right there in the waiting room. She had a good time even though she didn't want to go in the first place!!

Then there were her swimming lessons, and she has really improved, especially her backstroke.
